Our Simple Gender Neutral Nursery Details

December 12, 2020

I feel like I’m a minimalist, but once we started figuring out what we needed for the nursery, I was overwhelmed by how much STUFF babies require! Our little nursery is about 10 by 10 feet, so I knew that would keep temper some of the goodies and gadgets.

Plus, keeping it super gender neutral was important since we won’t know the babe’s sex until he or she gets here later this month. That’s helped me not go crazy with buying too many clothes or getting any bright colors, which actually worked out well because neutrals are more our style anyway!

Most importantly, I wanted it to feel like a calming, comforting space to just relax and learn and play and feel cozy in. I still don’t feel like it’s “done” but it’s as ready as we need it to be for the little one to arrive. It’s been so fun to carefully pick things to fill this room with sweet, simple items.

I did a TON of research on the tech stuff like the sound machine and monitor and safety of items like the mattress, bassinet, and baby swing. For the rest, I knew I wanted calm beiges, cool grays, and some gold details (which started when I found and fell in love with the gold crib). For “true” colors, I first found our mobile on Etsy and thought it was so, so sweet and delicate. I loved the mint, navy, mustard, and tan color combo, so I sort of built the rest of the gender neutral color palette around that piece.

If you’re looking for gender neutral nursery ideas or just need baby gift ideas for a friend or loved one, here’s a round-up of everything we chose and love for our gender neutral baby nursery!

Gender Neutral Nursery Decor & Accessories

01. The 4-in-1 gold crib, $545: I think this was the first thing I picked for the nursery. As much as I love simple neutrals, something about this fun gold finish sold me! So, so cute. And someone recommended to get the toddler bed converter guard rail $89 now just in case it’s no longer being made in a few years… so smart!

02. The Southwestern navy 5×8 rug, $312: I loooved the simple but textured look of this rug, and figured girls can like blue too (it’s my favorite color!).

03. Beige glider with ottoman, $349: I did soooo much research on gliders and there are hundreds out there. This one had good reviews and seemed comfortable and affordable, so I was sold. It’s a tad short for John to rest his head, but as he said, not many chairs are tall enough to support his head. It’s super comfy to me and I love that it came with the ottoman! And it was delivered fully put together… always a win.

04. Neutral blackout curtains, $109: We knew we needed blackout curtains for good daytime sleep and these ones were simple but so pretty. We got the brass curtain rod, $35, and brass clip rings, $9 for pack of 7 to complement the gold crib.

05. Navy and mint felt ball mobile, sold out: But super cute similar ones with the felt details here, $44, and here, $68.

06. 6-drawer dresser & changing table, sold out: I also loved this white and walnut option, $326, and this mid-century 7-drawer dresser, $736. I mainly wanted a 6-drawer, short dresser so it had plenty of storage and could double as the changing table.

07. The Keekaroo changing pad in vanilla, $130: Another beige item for a gender neutral nursery… groundbreaking! But… I will say, this changing pad has GREAT reviews and I like that you can just wipe it clean (unlike the fabric ones).

08. Gold bracket shelves, $64 for set of 2: These are sooo fun! After hanging some droopy floating shelves in our kitchen a few months ago, I vowed to embrace bracketed shelving from here on out. When I saw these with the gold brackets and affordable pricepoint, I was done. (Comes in a bunch of different finishes, too!)

09. Desert landscape print, $48 for 12×16, and cactus print, $48 for 12×16: And I got these simple white frames, $20, for them. I wasn’t going to buy art until the baby arrived and we knew the gender… but then I stumbled upon these prints and fell in love. I feel like they’re even prettier in real life! They come in multiple sizes.

10. Gray half moon fitted crib sheet, $29: I loved the pretty moon pattern and how soft these are. We’re using these organic mattress liners, $27.

11. Organic crib mattress, $150: I researched baby mattresses for…ever. I wanted one that didn’t have a bunch of chemicals and was breathable and hypoallergenic. This one fit the bill and was a good pricepoint!

12. Sound machine, $19: This can also double as a nightlight eventually, and plays music as well as white noise.

13. Baby monitor, $119: Another product I researched for a long while before finally landing on this one! It seemed like a good option with the video and audio capability.

14. Storage baskets: We got this bigger one for books and blankets, $34, and this one for toys, $12. Plus, I love these acrylic storage bins for diapers and changing table stuff, $39-59!

15. Diaper pail, $65: This is one that I’m familiar with from my nanny days and it hides the diaper stench well. So it was a shoo-in.

16. Bath time supplies: I read great reviews about this baby bath support, $20, for the tub so they’re safe and contained. And thought these plain gingham washcloths in gray, $12, and cloud towel set, $13, were perfect for either gender.

17. Laundry hamper, $15: I didn’t want anything complicated, but a lid was a must in case of stinky laundry items!

18. DockATot in marble, $196: This was totally a splurge item, but I’ve read only good things about DockATots for babies to lounge in when you want to be hands-free. They’re safe and can be used for a long time, so we figured it was worthwhile!

19. Rocking bassinet (travel friendly!), $120: The baby will sleep in our room the first month or two, so a minimal but safe bassinet was a must. This one has GREAT reviews, is easy to put together, and you can travel with it. Such a great deal!

20. Lovevery play gym, $140: I’ve heard ONLY amazing things about Lovevery toys. They are designed with Montessori activities in mind and stimulate learning and playing with safe, fun materials for babes.

21. Graco baby swing, $75: There are SO many baby swings available and it’s a bit overwhelming. At the end of it, I wanted one that was simple, no crazy colors, safe, and affordable. Here’s hoping our baby likes this one… the reviews make me super optimistic!

22. Ceramic gray table lamp, $30: We’d picked a different lamp at first (this one, $40!) but it arrived damaged and I couldn’t find the same one at our local Target, but I still love the simplicity of this gray one.

Who do you think was more excited about this day t Who do you think was more excited about this day trip out to the coast... us or Wallace? 😅😂 I love them. Also, I can’t get over the burp cloth on John’s shoulder. Ya know, just in case. #newparentlife

The first week of Wallace’s life? I ached even being in another room from him (#hormones). I was a wreck of emotions and had legitimate baby tunnel vision... preeeetty much nothing else mattered. But things have been balancing out this past week, and today was so needed.

My mom is in town all month and watched Wally for us so we could have some time just us two—yep, in the backyard because of shelter in place restrictions from COVID. (Plus let’s be real... I’m not quite ready for an out-of-the-house date yet anyway. 😂)

As much as I desire to be a present + loving mama and ambitious business owner, it’s just as important to me to prioritize our marriage with little moments like this to just be in each other’s presence (and not just talk about burping and swaddling and bedtime routines, like most of our recent convos).

Here’s to (almost) 2 weeks of being parents, @the_beermonger. I think we’ll do okay.

Wallace is hitting all his milestones, has learned the alphabet, and is picking up Latin. Just kidding. But he CAN poop 3 times in an hour and a half 😎, and he eats like a champ, is so strong that we prefer to tag team diaper changes for now, and makes the sweetest, cutest noises all day long. (And night.) Like even his cry is cute. 😩

One of my friends called this time the “wet weeks”: urine, breast milk, spit up, night sweats, tears, blood, more tears. It’s a lot, and it’s temporary. So even in the hard moments, we are reminding ourselves that the hardest things are often the best things.

And this really has been the best thing.

So, so thankful for a hands-on husband who’s been so involved in everything... there’s something indescribable about watching your partner care for your child and step into a big, new role like this so gracefully. And we are thankful for ALL of the support, near and far (... mostly far), from our family and friends and coworkers. What a week... here’s to continuing to figure it all out together as a family. 😌

Welcome, Wallace Ronal Skelton. 🤎 You kept us waiting until you decided, very quickly, you’d like to be here. I’m still in disbelief that you are ours.

Well, this baby friend doesn’t exactly have our Well, this baby friend doesn’t exactly have our sense of punctuality which realllly threw me for a loop after thinking & saying for months that I was certain he/she would get here early. I’ve drank 3 boxes of raspberry leaf tea in 3 weeks, walked dozens of miles, eaten way too many dates, done hundreds of squats and bench step-ups... and now I’m surrendering. You come whenever you feel like it, little one. I’m comfy enough and can still sleep through the night (minus a bathroom break or two) so we will just keep on waiting and letting you teach us our first lesson of parenthood: PATIENCE. I knew I could always use some more of it. 😉 #40weekspregnant #pregnancy
