Quarantine Baby Skelton: Coming January 2021!

June 23, 2020

So… that escalated quickly. One minute we’re quarantined and the next, we’re pregnant! I have a feeling we won’t be the only ones coming out of this weird season with a quarantine baby.

Okay but truly, we could not be more thrilled! John and I have just been spending the last couple months wrapping our minds around the fact that we’re going from a family of 3 (including Piper) to 4 in just about a half a year! I’m 12 weeks and 1 day pregnant, due January 4th, 2021.

The due date is actually one of the sweetest things for me. Of course, I know he or she could come early or later, but I’m guessing it’ll be after the holidays regardless. First, my sister’s birthday is December 29th and it will be so fun to have a side-by-side celebration. Plus, I LOVE the holidays and always have a bout of sadness when they’re over, but now I’ll never be sad after the holidays again. Just one of so many blessings both known and unknown in this new journey.

8 Things Getting Me Through The Q

May 7, 2020

As an introverted, Enneagram 6 homebody (who also already worked from home!), I feel like I was oddly prepared for life in quarantine. In fact, I’m actually less alone than before because now John’s here with me all the time. It’s so funny though because we still spend most of our days separate as we work, and even do our own things for breakfast and lunch and then reconvene for dinner as though it’s a normal, non-quarantine day. Even though I like my alone time, it’s been really nice having someone around during the day. And let’s just say I’m unloading the dishwasher way less than I normally do with him being here. DOUBLE PERK.

In Sonoma County, some businesses are slowly being allowed to re-open, but the general public’s stay-home orders were extended indefinitely last weekend. So we might as well keep getting cozy and used to being here (which bodes well for our pup recovering from knee surgery). As completely weird as this whole thing is, I don’t HATE the whole slower pace part of it.

It’s allowed me to plan and work on things I’d put off for a while (like the gorgeous new branding of my website, thanks to my friend behind Ink + Ellie). And I’ve been able to lean into hobbies that a normal pace would keep me from (or more truthfully, that I’d say I didn’t “have time” for). Reading in the middle of the day, gardening, painting, and baking up a storm are on my short list of things I can’t quit right now. So I thought I’d share all the little joys and bursts of brightness that I’m leaning into while we’re under quarantine, in case you need some ideas or are getting tired of the same old things every day.

Life Lately: Home Buying, Quarantining & Dog Surgery

April 27, 2020

Whew, 2020 has gotten off to a WILD start, and I’ve found myself just wanting to pause and journal to take a sort of snapshot of this time. A LOT has happened, and I want to be able to look back at this post to remember the craziness and the goodness that’s filled up the first part of 2020.

This photo was actually taken on New Year’s Day, which feels like at least a year ago even though it was just months. We took a hike with Piper on the Sonoma Coast and on our way back our car to have a little picnic and champagne, a man with a giant camera in his hand told us he’d gotten a great shot of us on a vista and handed us his business card in case we wanted the photo.

I immediately was like, “Uh-huh, sounds not creepy at all,” but John went ahead and reached out, and this is what he sent us. It makes sense that he was able to tell who we were and track us down because we were pretty much the only people out there with a dog (in hindsight we realized dogs weren’t allowed on that trail … whoops). I was blown away when I saw this shot and was immediately brought to tears by the kindness of a stranger who didn’t have to stop us and share this with us, but who did it anyway.

Based on that experience, I figured 2020 was going to be full of beautiful surprises, and well, it has been, to some extent at least!

NASHVILLE TRAVEL GUIDE: WHERE TO STAY, EAT, PLAY & MORE

December 13, 2019

Probably my favorite place I’ve ever lived is Nashville, TN. It’s just SO FUN. That’s all. I love the friendly, artistic culture and the fact that it’s small for a city, so it’s fairly easy to get around (as long as you miss rush hour, but even that isn’t as bad as other places I’ve lived… *cough cough Austin*).

I love that there’s so much to do, from professional sports and live music (of course) and great food to adorable pockets of town with their own little scenes and vibes.

I love that you get all four seasons, but it’s not too unbearable in the winter months like some states just north of Tennessee. I love the charming old architecture, the Southern hospitality energy, and that there’s hiking and water and easy roadtrips all nearby.

The people are neighborly, the food is insane, and the coffee shops are Instagram goals. There are breweries aplenty, and really the only thing missing (and the reason we don’t live there now) is an abundance of wine/wineries for John to work at. But hey, there is ONE, and it’s good — Arrington Vineyards, if you’re looking for a sales or business analyst, call us.

Kidding. Kind of. It’s also just as fun a place to visit as it is to live, and I’ve had so many friends going on bachelorette parties or taking girls trips or heading to a festival in Nashville that text me asking: What do we NEED to do?!

Who do you think was more excited about this day t Who do you think was more excited about this day trip out to the coast... us or Wallace? 😅😂 I love them. Also, I can’t get over the burp cloth on John’s shoulder. Ya know, just in case. #newparentlife

The first week of Wallace’s life? I ached even being in another room from him (#hormones). I was a wreck of emotions and had legitimate baby tunnel vision... preeeetty much nothing else mattered. But things have been balancing out this past week, and today was so needed.

My mom is in town all month and watched Wally for us so we could have some time just us two—yep, in the backyard because of shelter in place restrictions from COVID. (Plus let’s be real... I’m not quite ready for an out-of-the-house date yet anyway. 😂)

As much as I desire to be a present + loving mama and ambitious business owner, it’s just as important to me to prioritize our marriage with little moments like this to just be in each other’s presence (and not just talk about burping and swaddling and bedtime routines, like most of our recent convos).

Here’s to (almost) 2 weeks of being parents, @the_beermonger. I think we’ll do okay.

Wallace is hitting all his milestones, has learned the alphabet, and is picking up Latin. Just kidding. But he CAN poop 3 times in an hour and a half 😎, and he eats like a champ, is so strong that we prefer to tag team diaper changes for now, and makes the sweetest, cutest noises all day long. (And night.) Like even his cry is cute. 😩

One of my friends called this time the “wet weeks”: urine, breast milk, spit up, night sweats, tears, blood, more tears. It’s a lot, and it’s temporary. So even in the hard moments, we are reminding ourselves that the hardest things are often the best things.

And this really has been the best thing.

So, so thankful for a hands-on husband who’s been so involved in everything... there’s something indescribable about watching your partner care for your child and step into a big, new role like this so gracefully. And we are thankful for ALL of the support, near and far (... mostly far), from our family and friends and coworkers. What a week... here’s to continuing to figure it all out together as a family. 😌

Welcome, Wallace Ronal Skelton. 🤎 You kept us waiting until you decided, very quickly, you’d like to be here. I’m still in disbelief that you are ours.

I’ve drank 3 boxes of raspberry leaf tea in 3 weeks, walked dozens of miles, eaten way too many dates, done hundreds of squats and bench step-ups... and now I’m surrendering. You come whenever you feel like it, little one. I’m comfy enough and can still sleep through the night (minus a bathroom break or two) so we will just keep on waiting and letting you teach us our first lesson of parenthood: PATIENCE. I knew I could always use some more of it. 😉 #40weekspregnant #pregnancy
